#9. The 25th Ward: The Silver Case

- Genre: Adventure » Visual Novel
The 25th Ward: The Silver Case, while not for everyone, is still a unique visual novel experience that oozes creativity.
Its gameplay elements do slightly bog it down, but the stylized writing, entertaining characters, and one of a kind story more than make up for it.
Overall, it’s a truly memorable adventure that visual novel fans should definitely look into.
#8. Fragments of Him
- Release Data: Sassybot, 2017
- Genre: Adventure » Visual Novel
As a videogame, Fragments of Him falters far too often, providing little interactivity, and dragging things out to extend the brief runtime.
Yet there’s something here worth experiencing from a narrative perspective.
This is a well-written eulogy of a recently deceased man by the people whose lives intertwined with his, covering his flaws, strengths, and sexuality in frank and brutal fashion.
#7. Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness
- Release Data: 5pb/NIS America, 2016
- Genre: Adventure » Visual Novel
Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness is an enjoyable cyberpunk adventure with an excellent setting and cast of characters that are worth caring about.
It doesn’t quite stretch its storytelling aspect as far as it could, confined by the traditional visual novel formula in ways that feel detrimental to the overall narrative.
But despite this, the world is compelling, original and thought-provoking at times.
#6. Hatoful Boyfriend
- Release Data: Mediatonic/Devolver Digital, 2015
- Genre: Adventure » Visual Novel
The basic premise of this visual novel is completely insane, and gets more ridiculous the deeper you dive.
But if you can swallow the basic idea, there are a lot of weird and wonderful stories to be uncovered in Hatoful Boyfriend.
Just don’t expect to do much actual playing.
#5. Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth
- Release Data: Kalypso, 2017
- Genre: Adventure » Visual Novel
It might not be a game for everyone as it deliberately chooses to take its time getting to the point.
However, if you enjoy gripping dramas, and don’t mind sitting still for a bit, The Pillars of the Earth will reward your patience with what appears to be a fascinating tale.
#4. Chaos;Child
- Release Data: 5pb, 2017
- Genre: Adventure » Visual Novel
With a story this good, it will be difficult for players to not be emotionally invested in these characters and their goals.
The game’s runtime might be high with a few dips in the pacing, but the payoff is worth it when the game leaves you completely broken and begging jump back in for a different route.
#3. Steins;Gate 0
- Release Data: 5pb/PQube, 2016
- Genre: Adventure » Visual Novel
Steins;Gate 0 is essential for fans of the original and a fascinating experience for newcomers.
A great continuation of the classic virtual novel and anime world, it’s not a format for everyone, but if you have the patience for leisurely paced sci-fi, then this is a worthy investment.
#2. Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma
- Release Data: Aksys Games, 2017
- Genre: Adventure » Visual Novel
Zero Time Dilemma does a mountain of work in wrapping up the trilogy in a meaningful way while simultaneously giving new characters depth and tying the loose ends left from those returning.
A few bumps and swerves along the way might leave you scratching your head, but it still manages to shock and surprise with exciting and jaw-dropping twists.
#1. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony
