We already published the list of best PS1 games of all time, now it’s time to discover the best PS1 puzzle games of all time.
With amazing titles available, the PS1 definitely has a great library of puzzle games.
So, if you’re a fan of both the PS1 and puzzle games, there’s a chance you’ll like this list.
And some of you may already know some of the games mentioned in this list.
#10. No One Can Stop Mr. Domino
- Release Data: Artdink/JVC Digital Studios, 1998
- Genre: Puzzle » Action
This game is recommended on two aspects only: great gameplay and clever design.
You can’t go wrong with a game that’s strong in these two areas, and since this title doesn’t excel anywhere else, you’ll simply have to go with these.
It is one of those rare games that’s accessible enough for non-gamers and fun enough for experienced gamers.
#9. Intelligent Qube
- Release Data: G-Artists/SCEI, 1997
- Genre: Puzzle » General
Intelligent Qube is simple, fun, and horribly addictive, just the way a good puzzle game should be.
While the graphics are nothing to write home about, and the soundtrack is repetitive, puzzle games are 99 percent gameplay, and Intelligent Qube mainlines that pretty nicely.
Gamers who love a good original puzzle game should check it out.
#8. Bomberman Party Edition
- Release Data: Metro/Virgin Interactive, 2000
- Genre: Puzzle » Action
Despite its unusually deficient single-player mode, Bomberman Party Edition still manages to succeed where many previous attempts have failed, delivering an uproariously enjoyable multiplayer experience.
However, the visuals is less than modern, but if you give it a minute or two, you’ll likely find the addiction known as Bomberman has you in its grasp.
#7. The Next Tetris
- Release Data: Blue Planet Software/Bullet Proof Software, 1999
- Genre: Puzzle » Stacking
This game is recommended to anyone looking for a new Tetris fix—it’s definitely different enough from the other versions.
Once you discover the beauty of The Next Tetris‘ new block system, you’ll immediately become hooked.
But again, be warned—this is not the old-school Tetris you’ve gotten used to over the years.
#6. Mr. Driller
- Release Data: Namco, 2000
- Genre: Puzzle » Action
A great value title that should appeal to almost anyone, Mr. Driller is a cute and quirky puzzler that lacks the variety to make it a long-term contender for your attention like Tetris would.
However, Mr. Driller is a worthwhile and refreshing return to the puzzle genre, however short-lived the game may be.
#5. Ballistic
- Release Data: Mitchell/Capcom, 1999
- Genre: Puzzle » Action
Despite the simplistic nature of the game and sheer mediocrity of many of the game elements, Ballistic is still a fairly fun puzzle game with a refreshingly new premise.
While the gameplay may get a little boring at times, it’s still fairly solid, and it lends itself well to people who aren’t necessarily fans of the puzzle genre.
#4. Devil Dice
- Release Data: Shift/SCEI, 1998
- Genre: Puzzle » Matching
While difficult to criticize due to the brilliance of the game and the incentives buried deep within, Devil Dice comes recommended only to those looking for, perhaps, the ultimate puzzle-game challenge.
Certainly not easy to learn and even more difficult to master, Devil Dice will keep its deepest secrets hidden from everyone except the most resolute of gamers.
#3. Bust-A-Move 4
- Release Data: Taito Corporation/D3Publisher, 1998
- Genre: Puzzle » Matching
The single-player game has enough characters to achieve a high volume of replay, and for puzzle battles, the multiplayer mode stands among one of the best.
Bust-A-Move 4 will be the type of game you play with your non-gaming friends, because it’s got so much character and because puzzle games are always respectable.
#2. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
- Release Data: Capcom/Virgin Interactive, 1996
- Genre: Puzzle » Matching
All in all, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is an excellent puzzle game to play with your friends, and is fun even when you’re playing alone.
It doesn’t matter if you like puzzlers or not, you owe it to yourself to check this game out.
#1. Roll Away
- Release Data: Game Design Sweden AB/SCEI, 1998
- Genre: Puzzle » Action
What Roll Away lacks over other puzzle games is a strong two-player mode.
That aside, Roll Away is a great game that offers just about all the addiction, frustration, and satisfaction a puzzle fan could ask for.
It’s originality and strong level design makes it a welcome departure from the norm.
