And some of you may already know some of the games mentioned in this list.
#25. How to Survive
- Release Data: EKO Software/505 Games, 2013
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Much like its inspirations, How to Survive is a mishmash of proven ideas.
And while it may be stained with an insubstantial campaign and a few other minor problems, How to Survive is a worthy game built on a strong foundation of exciting experiences.
#24. Clive Barker’s Jericho
- Release Data: Mercury Steam/Codemasters, 2007
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Overall, Jericho delivers a solid gameplay experience.
The deep, dark and expertly told story born from Clive Barker’s imagination is sure to keep fans of the supernatural/horror genre entertained.
With beautiful detail in character personality, history and ability in addition to professional voice acting, it seems that you are watching a movie instead of playing a survival horror FPS.
#23. Silent Hill: Downpour
- Release Data: Konami, 2012
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Silent Hill: Downpour is a solid game with a typically twisted story underneath all of the pretense.
Still, the gameplay mechanics are starting to show their age and there is a lack of genuine shocks and intrigue, it feels like familiar ground.
But despite this, Downpour is considered an above average survival horror game.
#22. Resident Evil 6
- Release Data: Capcom, 2012
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Resident Evil 6 won’t be everyone’s favorite game, but most people will find something to love about the game whether it be one of the game’s many campaigns, the return of Mercenary Mode, the all new Agent Hunt Mode or the game’s new approach to the survival horror genre it helped establish in the late 90s.
#21. I Am Alive
- Release Data: Ubisoft Shanghai/Ubisoft, 2012
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
I Am Alive effectively draws you into a city gone to ruin by relying on instinctual human reactions to establish a strong emotional connection.
From a technical standpoint, there’s nothing special here.
However, I Am Alive is a well-crafted adventure that keeps you tense throughout, and it makes you desperate to know the ending.
#20. Resident Evil Code: Veronica X HD
- Release Data: Capcom, 2011
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Resident Evil Code: Veronica X HD still does the job especially if you’re obsessed about all things Resident Evil.
And if you’re new to the title, you might even enjoy hunting down the handful of achievements or trophies or unlocking the two additional playable characters.
#19. Alien Breed: Evolution
- Release Data: Team 17, 2009
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
There is certainly a lot more polish on this reincarnation than its original, with rich environments, fluid motion and a perfect spine tingling soundtrack to immerse you in the spaceship.
Overall, there is a great title here, but the major disappointment is its length.
#18. Silent Hill: Homecoming
- Release Data: Double Helix Games/Konami, 2008
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Silent Hill: Homecoming, while quite a departure from the psychological horror that fans are used to, is a decent, occult-themed survival horror game that you can squeeze 10 hours of enjoyment from.
If, however, you’re looking for a classic Silent Hill-style game, you will likely be disappointed.
#17. Alice: Madness Returns
- Release Data: Spicy Horse/Electronic Arts, 2011
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Alice: Madness Returns is a fun, if not sometimes repetitive game that constantly stuns with its beautiful visuals.
Though spoiled with repetition and the occasional immersion-breaking invisible wall, it is a thoroughly enjoyable experience that is supplemented with twists and turns through a well-written story.
#16. Dead Island
- Release Data: Techland/Deep Silver, 2011
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
As an open world survival horror game based on killing zombies with friends, Dead Island is a proposition rich with possibilities, and it exploits a good deal of them.
There’s easily 20 hours of content in a single playthrough—much more if you’re exploring the Polynesian paradise sandbox and messing around with trucks as much as you should be.
#15. Resident Evil: Revelations
- Release Data: Capcom, 2013
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
With its welcome return to classic-style horror action, Resident Evil: Revelations is very much worth playing in its HD form for its atmosphere and scares alone.
And if you’re looking for a solid Resident Evil game or simply a horror title in general, then Resident Evil Revelations isn’t a bad way to go.
#14. Alan Wake: The Signal
- Release Data: Remedy Entertainment/Microsoft Game Studios, 2010
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Although the story in The Signal isn’t nearly as impactful nor as focused as what was found in the original game, the rest of this episode lives up to what came before it.
The directionless story keeps The Signal from being a must-play, but this is still an enjoyable DLC with many intense moments.
#13. Dead Rising 2: Case West
- Release Data: Blue Castle Games/Capcom, 2010
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Just about everything in this game is really well done, and there are enough new weapons to surprise even the most hardened zombie-killing veteran.
Case West offers loads of enjoyment, and because you don’t even need the Dead Rising 2 retail disc to play it, even novices can enjoy the brutality.
#12. State of Decay
- Release Data: Undead Labs/Microsoft Game Studios, 2013
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
If you give State of Decay the benefit of the doubt and play more than an hour, you’ll soon discover that this is more than just an undead clone.

#11. Shadows of the Damned
- Release Data: Grasshopper Manufacture/Electronic Arts, 2011
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival

This is a tightly crafted adventure with a relentless sense of pace that continually pushes you forward.
Every boss fight serves to enhance the experience, and the combat sequences are so beautifully realized that they continually surprise and entertain.
#10. Resident Evil 5: Desperate Escape
- Release Data: Capcom, 2010
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
If you didn’t like the jarring switch to all-out action, then you probably aren’t going to care for this entry.
If you are the type of person that loved the action, however, then you’re going to get a kick out of this downloadable pack.
It’s never boring and certainly doesn’t miss a beat.
#9. Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares
- Release Data: Capcom, 2010
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
With its heart-pounding moments, scarce supplies of ammunition, and old-school puzzles, Lost in Nightmares delivers an entirely different experience than Resident Evil 5.
Whether you’ve been looking for a more traditional survival horror experience or you just want a new reason to play your copy of Resident Evil 5, Lost in Nightmares is a great investment.
#8. Condemned 2: Bloodshot
- Release Data: Monolith Productions/Sega Europe, 2008
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
It may take you nine hours to finish up the main story, though you can return to it at higher difficulty levels, or compare scores with others.
But the reason to play Condemned 2: Bloodshot is to be scared, to be shocked, and to explore the secrets of a slimy world where the natural and the supernatural become intertwined.
#7. Alan Wake: The Writer
- Release Data: Remedy Entertainment/Microsoft Game Studios, 2010
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
The Writer a must-play for anybody that downloaded The Signal as it wraps up the mini-story arc.
In total, the two add-ons offer a great addendum to the main game, turning the final punctuation from a question mark to a period.
Though The Writer may be a bit short, the playful level design and dialogue makes it a winner.
#6. Condemned: Criminal Origins
- Release Data: Monolith Productions/Sega, 2005
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Condemned: Criminal Origins isn’t a long game and it only has one game mode, but it’s an unforgettable experience while it lasts.
At no point in the game will you be calm or feel comfortable, and that’s the best part about it.
#5. Dead Rising 2: Case Zero
- Release Data: Blue Castle Games/Capcom, 2010
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
The unique, ticking-clock structure is different from that in any other open-world survival game, so anyone who enjoyed the original will have plenty to like in this miniature package.
It does take only a couple of hours to reach the credits, but to see every ending and compete every objective, you’ll need to come back a few more times.
#4. Catherine
- Release Data: Atlus, 2011
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
This story-heavy puzzler is mature and occasionally profound, exploring themes like sexual fidelity, personal responsibility, and trust.
Catherine doesn’t just challenge your hand-eye coordination: It challenges your intellect and your emotions.
This is a game that blends so much together and is so different than anything else on the market that it’s for just about anyone who really loves games.
#3. Alan Wake
- Release Data: Remedy Entertainment/Microsoft Game Studios, 2010
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Alan Wake’s strengths lie in its well-written story and a great cast of characters.

So, if you’re looking for a good story, Alan Wake will blow you away.
#2. Resident Evil 5
- Release Data: Capcom, 2009
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
Resident Evil 5 successfully builds on the foundation of its predecessor while taking it in a drastically different direction.
Having a partner introduces new degrees of gameplay depth and dramatic tension that make the game more exciting to play.
Though the slow movement and shooting may not appeal to everyone, the large-scale battles and co-op play offer an exciting adventure.
#1. Resident Evil 4 HD
- Release Data: Capcom, 2011
- Genre: Action Adventure » Survival
If you already own Resident Evil 4 on other consoles, there is absolutely no reason to get this one other than the HD graphics.
