And some of you may already know some of the games mentioned in this list.
#10. Tomb Raider: Anniversary
- Release Data: Crystal Dynamics/Eidos Interactive, 2007
- Genre: Action Adventure » Linear
Tomb Raider: Legend did a lot to make Lara Croft feel relevant again, and Tomb Raider: Anniversary is another step in the right direction.
The acrobatic action is consistently exciting and challenging throughout.
And despite being a remake, the experience feels new and fresh.
#9. Alan Wake’s American Nightmare
- Release Data: Remedy Entertainment/Microsoft Game Studios, 2012
- Genre: Action Adventure » Linear
Those new to the franchise might feel lost, thanks to the surprising absence of any backstory or exposition.
Still, as was the case with the first game, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare manages to overcome some glaring issues, thanks to its strong writing.
#8. Dead Space 3
- Release Data: Visceral Games/Electronic Arts, 2013
- Genre: Action Adventure » Linear
From its terrific weapon crafting system to its deep well of side content, Dead Space 3 is a massive game rich with options and customization.
Whether you choose to approach it with a friend or alone, using a plasma cutter or an acid grenade launcher, Dead Space 3 makes fighting for survival a delight.
#7. Tomb Raider: Legend
- Release Data: Crystal Dynamics/Eidos Interactive, 2006
- Genre: Action Adventure » Linear
Tomb Raider: Legend is a good return to the roots of the series.
It doesn’t do anything new or different, but it has a great blend of action and adventure that will always keep you moving and interested.
The problem is that it moves a bit too fast, and it’s all over way too soon.
#6. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4
- Release Data: Traveller’s Tales/Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, 2010
- Genre: Action Adventure » Linear
The comedic cutscenes, the hundreds of hidden things to find, and the general sense of a great LEGO game paired with a great series really makes this game a standout.
There are still a few issues, but there’s plenty in LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 to keep you coming back for more.
#5. Devil May Cry 4
- Release Data: Capcom, 2008
- Genre: Action Adventure » Linear
Devil May Cry 4 is a great game, and it delivers a lot of quality action that will please fans without alienating newcomers.
If you liked previous entries, you’ll find what you’re looking for here; and if you were turned off by Devil May Cry 3‘s insane challenge, you’ll feel a lot more comfortable this time around.
#4. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
- Release Data: Starbreeze/505 Games, 2013
- Genre: Action Adventure » Linear
Getting used to controlling two characters at once can be a bit tricky but is never too tough.
And the world, marked by beautiful skies and colorful lands filled with fantastical creatures, is a visual treat.
The adventure lasts a brief three hours, but they’re three hours you won’t soon forget.
#3. DmC: Devil May Cry
- Release Data: Ninja Theory/Capcom, 2013
- Genre: Action Adventure » Linear
DMC: Devil May Cry is a stunning, fast paced, fun, uniquely designed, badass reboot to the beloved series and although it may not keep die hard fans happy in every department there is certainly enough there to see that the effort really pays off.
#2. Tomb Raider
- Release Data: Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix, 2013
- Genre: Action Adventure » Linear
In this Tomb Raider reboot, the single-player campaign is the main attraction, and it is excellent.
It doesn’t try to rewrite the book on third-person action adventure games.
And with its excellent controls, engaging heroine, thrilling combat, and fascinating setting, it doesn’t need to.
#1. Bayonetta
- Release Data: PlatinumGames/Sega, 2010
- Genre: Action Adventure » Linear
Full of often silly but always memorable moments, Bayonetta is hard to get out of your mind even after you’ve stopped playing it.
More than anything else, almost everything about Bayonetta feels just right.
In the end, this is one action adventure game that you absolutely must not miss.
