And some of you may already know some of the games mentioned in this list.
#25. Pitfall: The Lost Expedition
- Release Data: Edge of Reality/Activision, 2004
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
This is a worthy sequel to the classic franchise in every way.
Tight control, innovative single-arm abilities, and huge, ambient, varied environments to explore with classic play elements reborn in 3D such as the abilities to run on crocodiles, swing on vines, and jump across pits.
This is an overall fun, engaging title that successfully mixes the platformer and adventure genres.
#24. Dr. Muto
- Release Data: Midway, 2002
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
While somewhat original and highly entertaining, Dr. Muto is far from the perfect platformer.
Its weaknesses sometimes overshadow the gameplay, but there are many fun moments scattered throughout the game.
In other words, there is enough here to consider this a game worthy of your time.
#23. Tak and the Power of Juju
- Release Data: Avalanche Software/THQ, 2003
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
Tak manages to breathe new energy and life into the platforming genre.
While not a revolutionary title, Tak possesses enough characteristics that you want to play it through it.
Perhaps it’s because of the goofy main character, a humorous plot line, or some creative ways to present age old puzzles that make you want to play through Tak.
#22. Tak: The Great Juju Challenge
- Release Data: Avalanche Software/THQ, 2005
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
Tak: The Great Juju Challenge isn’t going to turn the platformer genre on its side, but the game is surprisingly fun all the same.
However, drawbacks considered, it remains a rock-solid addition to the series and also one that we can recommend to kids and platformer die-hard fans alike.
#21. Tak 2: The Staff of Dreams
- Release Data: Avalanche Software/THQ, 2004
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
Tak 2: The Staff of Dreams is a great sequel to what was a fun, well-designed platformer.
But not only that, Tak 2 is a lot more fun thanks in large to a smart, rewarding gameplay dynamic that appeals itself to both younger and older players.
#20. SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom
- Release Data: Heavy Iron Studios/THQ, 2003
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
It’s a good licensed game for kids and kids at heart.
If you’re a fan of Jak & Daxter, you’ll find that SpongeBob is similar, although not quite as good, but a very solid worthwhile game.
In fact, any fan of 3D platformers in general would do well to give this game a try, especially if you like the show.
#19. I-Ninja
- Release Data: Argonaut Games/SCEE, 2003
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
At first glance, I-Ninja may appear to be a simple action game designed for kids, but in reality, it is anything but.
The visual style may seem kid-friendly, but the level of challenge I-Ninja has to offer keeps the game interesting for a wider audience.
#18. Contra: Shattered Soldier
- Release Data: KCET/Konami, 2002
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 2D
Shattered Soldier has some hidden bonuses to be unlocked and has a decent amount of replay value in general, since playing the game with two players puts a different spin on the action, and the game’s default difficulty level is very tough.
#17. Ape Escape 3
- Release Data: SCE Japan Studio/SCEA, 2006
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
For those who just can’t get enough of the concept of running around and catching wacky monkeys, Ape Escape 3 will be like a little slice of heaven.
And if you haven’t tried out any of the Ape Escape games yet, pick up Ape Escape 3 as it’s one hell of a game.
#16. Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
- Release Data: Ubisoft, 2003
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
Ultimately, Rayman 3 probably isn’t the mind-blowing follow-up that fans of Rayman 2 were hoping for.
What Rayman 3 does is re-create much of the same lighthearted humor that made Rayman 2 so incredibly enjoyable, while differentiating the action enough for the game to stand up on its own.
#15. Ape Escape 2
- Release Data: SCE Japan Studio/SCEI, 2003
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
The game’s relative ease is offset by the sheer number of weird unlockable items, and the end result is a platform game that is, above all, fun.
The monkeys’ activities will have you laughing, and the humor is backed up by solid gameplay and level design.
Overall, Ape Escape 2 is a great platform game.
#14. Maximo vs Army of Zin
- Release Data: Capcom, 2004
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
Maximo vs. Army of Zin is a great sequel.
Of course, it can be a maddeningly difficult game but it’s also an addictive one.

#13. Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves
- Release Data: Sucker Punch/SCEA, 2005
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D

#12. Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil
- Release Data: Namco/SCEE, 2001
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
Because of its tight gameplay, awesome visuals, and great soundtrack, Klonoa 2 is an almost perfect platform game.
You’ll wish that the game were longer, and if you’re experienced with games of this kind, you’ll probably wish it were a little harder too.
Still, Klonoa 2 is a pleasure to play from start to finish.
#11. Maximo: Ghosts to Glory
- Release Data: Capcom, 2002
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
The graphics are simple yet endearing, the gameplay is repetitive but solid, and the game’s design is a throwback to the 16-bit era.
If you have a short attention span or require run-and-gun action from your video games, Maximo‘s gameplay will be a turnoff.
But if you’re a detail-oriented person, Maximo is your game.
#10. Rayman 2 Revolution
- Release Data: Ubisoft, 2001
- Genre: Action » Platformer » 3D
Even though it’s not quite as solid as the Dreamcast version, which ran at 60 FPS, the PS2 game does have plenty of enhancements and improvements in other areas that make it a comparable title.
And if you have yet to experience the platforming brilliance that is Rayman 2, you owe it to yourself to pick this game up.
#9. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
