We already published the list of best N64 games of all time, now it’s time to discover the best N64 simulation games of all time.
With amazing titles available, the N64 definitely has a great library of simulation games.
So, if you’re a fan of both the N64 and simulation games, there’s a chance you’ll like this list.
And some of you may already know some of the games mentioned in this list.
#10. Aero Fighters Assault
- Release Data: Paradigm Entertainment/Video System, 1997
- Genre: Simulation » Flight » Combat
AeroFighters Assault ends up being a surprisingly decent game.
Unfortunately, its appeal won’t be very wide because it’s not for die-hard flight simulation fans and it’s not for Star Fox 64 fans, either.
If you’re into shooters, get Star Fox 64. If you like flight sims, get PilotWings 64.
#9. Nuclear Strike 64
- Release Data: Pacific Coast Power & Light/THQ, 1999
- Genre: Simulation » Flight » Combat
The varied mission design and fast action of Nuclear Strike 64 make it a worthwhile flight sim shooter, even if the game it was based on is more than two years old.
Some players may find that the enemies don’t aim well enough, making the game a little too easy, but it’s a fun experience regardless.
#8. Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense
- Release Data: Luxoflux, Inc./Activision, 2000
- Genre: Simulation » Vehicle » Combat
Without Twisted Metal on the Nintendo 64, Vigilante reigns alone as king of car combat gaming.
However, this was still a hard-fought crown, and the gameplay and amazing graphics are testament to that.
And the game is still fun, which is more than I can say for any other car combat sequels.
#7. BattleTanx: Global Assault
- Release Data: 3DO, 1999
- Genre: Simulation » Vehicle » Combat
Overall, this game is a great game to play. It took the previous game and successfully improved in many ways.
Improvements include the tank bucks system, weapon pickup system, tank design, controls, and missions.
It is unfortunate that the writing for the plot remains weak and the length remains disappointingly short.
#6. Army Men: Air Combat
- Release Data: 3DO, 2000
- Genre: Simulation » Vehicle » Combat
Army Men: Air Combat is a decent game. It succeeds in what it sets out to do, but this game wasn’t designed to change the face of video gaming.
The single player game may start off a little too slowly for many gamers who want an instant challenge, but the two player co-op mode is really a great time.
#5. BattleTanx
- Release Data: 3DO, 1998
- Genre: Simulation » Vehicle » Combat
Overall, BattleTanx is a mildly entertaining game when playing in the single-player mode.
Unfortunately, its short length and redundancy make it more of a game you play once and then forget about it.
However, if you’ve been looking for a good multiplayer game that you and a couple friends can play over and over again, BattleTanx is the one.
#4. Star Wars: Episode I Battle for Naboo
- Release Data: Factor 5/LucasArts, 2000
- Genre: Simulation » Space » Combat
Being able to use a variety of land, sea and air vehicles makes for an interesting gameplay experience, although there are a few issues when it comes to control.
It may be short, but it approaches the source material in an intelligent manner, focusing on what makes Star Wars the space opera epic it is: the battles.
#3. Vigilante 8
- Release Data: Luxoflux, Inc./Activision, 1999
- Genre: Simulation » Vehicle » Combat
Vigilante 8 was one of the most celebrated car combat games on the PlayStation, and with new multiplayer options and improved graphics the N64 version is even better.
In the end, Vigilante 8 for the N64 is not only the best car-combat game for the system, but with its great multiplayer options, it even has a bit of an edge over its PlayStation counterpart.
#2. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
- Release Data: Factor 5/Nintendo, 1998
- Genre: Simulation » Space » Combat
Overall, Rogue Squadron is a good mission-based shooter.
Fans of the film will be pleased with the good usage of the Star Wars universe. Being able to fly by Jabba’s palace, or to see Han Solo’s homeworld is really a treat.
Any fan of the first level of Shadows of the Empire really should check out Rogue Squadron.
#1. Pilotwings 64
- Release Data: Nintendo, 1996
- Genre: Simulation » Flight » Civilian
From its lush and detailed landscapes to the professional level of control, Pilotwings 64 utilizes all of the N64’s most prominent features to provide a wholesome and adventurous gameplay experience.
On the surface, Pilotwings 64 may seem shallow, but those that delve deeper will actually find a fun and rewarding game that draws them back in time and time again.
