We already published the list of best GBC games of all time, now it’s time to discover the best GBC sports games of all time.
With amazing titles available, the GBC definitely has a great library of sports games.
So, if you’re a fan of both the GBC and sports games, there’s a chance you’ll like this list.
And some of you may already know some of the games mentioned in this list.
#10. MTV Sports: Pure Ride
- Release Data: Visual Impact/THQ, 2000
- Genre: Sports » Individual » Ski / Snowboard
MTV Sports: Pure Ride isn’t exactly pure at all.
Essentially a snowboarding title grafted onto what looks like the code from the developer’s motorcycle racing game, this boarding game makes the best of the situation and offers a few nice aerials, but still has trouble trying to pull off some real trick style.
#9. WCW Mayhem
- Release Data: 2n Productions/Electronic Arts, 2000
- Genre: Sports » Individual » Combat » Wrestling
WCW Mayhem marks a respectable entry for EA into the realm of handheld wrestling titles.
While a great deal needs improvement, the company has easily created the best GBC wrestling title to date.
Furthermore, since the game has a more well-known license, the excitement level is also a cut above the rest.
#8. Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX
- Release Data: Neon Studios/Acclaim, 2000
- Genre: Sports » Individual » Biking
Although you can delight yourself on any of the game’s courses with stunt scoring and combo competitions, the game’s multiplayer offerings aren’t very deep.
It may not be perfect, but Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX plays well and looks awesome—two traits that will no doubt make this title a playable one.
#7. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2
- Release Data: Natsume/Activision, 2000
- Genre: Sports » Individual » Skate / Skateboard
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 on the Game Boy Color is a much better skateboarding game than the original version that was released previously.
The same developer responsible for the first portable Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater improved the design in nearly every conceivable way in this decent sequel, creating a very enjoyable and playable shreddin’ title for the system.
#6. Madden NFL 2000
- Release Data: Tiertex Design Studios/THQ, 1999
- Genre: Sports » Team » Football » Sim
One thing about this game is, the game briefly pauses whenever the ball is thrown so that you can easily find the ball on the screen and respond accordingly.
Fans of portable gaming who generally dislike sports titles should give Madden 2000 a try: The control is dead-on, the graphics are clean, and there are enough options to keep you playing.
#5. Road Champs: BXS Stunt Biking
- Release Data: HotGen/Activision, 2000
- Genre: Sports » Individual » Biking
The game is a lot of fun to play but it’s just not incredibly deep.
But what’s been done here is excellent, offering a ton of moves and tricks in its simple perspective and complex control structure.
Overall, the game’s high learning curve hurt the overall rating, but getting Road Champs BXS wouldn’t be a bad move at all.
#4. Mat Hoffman’s Pro BMX
- Release Data: HotGen/Activision, 2001
- Genre: Sports » Individual » Biking
All in all, Activision has taken a big risk by basing Mat Hoffman’s Pro BMX on the game engine of a similar title.
However, unless you’ve played Road Champs BXS Stunt Biking to death, the sheer number of gameplay and style improvements present in Mat Hoffman’s ultimately make it the more satisfying of the two games.
#3. Xtreme Sports
- Release Data: WayForward/Infogrames, 2000
- Genre: Sports » Individual » Other
For a pick-up-and-play game, this Game Boy Color title offers a fresh approach to the whole skating/surfing world.
Compared to what’s been offered already on the Game Boy Color, Xtreme Sports is on the top.
If you’re after something unique then this is definitely a good choice, rewarding skill and offering a fun time whether you’re a sports fan or not.
#2. Mario Golf
- Release Data: Camelot Software Planning/Nintendo, 1999
- Genre: Sports » Individual » Golf » Arcade
This handheld golfing game has a lot in common with its console equivalent, Mario Golf on the Nintendo 64.
Like that game, players can play a full round of golf, facing off against a wide variety of popular Mario characters.
This is one sports game that is fun regardless of your involvement with the original sport.
#1. Mario Tennis
- Release Data: Camelot Software Planning/Nintendo, 2001
- Genre: Sports » Individual » Tennis
Like Mario Tennis on Nintendo 64, this tennis title is meant to be easy-to-learn and fun to play.
Players select from a list of athletes, ranging from Nintendo characters to standard human athletes.
Players can also transfer their characters to the Nintendo 64 version of the game, earning experience that they can then transfer back to the Game Boy Color version.
