We already published the list of best GBC games of all time, now it’s time to discover the best GBC RPGs of all time.
With amazing titles available, the GBC definitely has a great library of RPGs.
So, if you’re a fan of both the GBC and RPGs, there’s a chance you’ll like this list.
And some of you may already know some of the games mentioned in this list.
#10. Revelations: The Demon Slayer
- Release Data: Multimedia Intelligence Transfer/Atlus, 1999
- Genre: Role-Playing » Japanese-Style
Since there’s a serious lack of RPGs for the GBC, Revelations: The Demon Slayer is welcomed with open arms.
Although it’s not perfect for everyone, it should appeal to those of us who are constantly keeping our eyes open for handheld RPGs with tons of battles based on choosing from menus.
#9. Crystalis
- Release Data: Nintendo Software Technology/Nintendo, 2000
- Genre: Role-Playing » Action RPG
Crystalis is worth buying for those who never played it before because of the great adventure.
It may be worth buying for those who are veterans of the original version for nostalgic value and to see what’s different, but if you do, it is suggested to disable the sound.
#8. Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite!
- Release Data: Pax Softonica/Nintendo, 2002
- Genre: Role-Playing » Japanese-Style
Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite! is a basic adventure, but it’s fun and engrossing in its simplicity.
The game’s quest is a decently long one, with a clever little story that’ll keep you interested until the quest is over.
The payoff at the end is a little silly, but the designers insure that there’s much more gameplay well after the adventure’s completion.
#7. Dragon Warrior Monsters
- Release Data: TOSE/Enix Corporation, 2000
- Genre: Role-Playing » Trainer
This game blends the RPG focus of the Dragon Quest franchise with the catching and breeding mechanics of Pokemon.
Like Pokemon, players travel around the world capturing hostile monsters and adding them to their party.
This game has dozens of hours of RPG and monster-catching fun, so definitely check it out!
#6. Pokemon Crystal Version
- Release Data: Game Freak/Nintendo, 2001
- Genre: Role-Playing » Trainer
Like Pokemon Silver and Gold, Crystal follows the story of a young Pokemon trainer attempting to become the world’s best.
Pokemon Crystal contains a few unique features as well, such as the ability to pick between either a boy or girl Pokemon trainer.
There are also some additional stories that have been added, revolving around the powerful “legendary” Pokemon.
#5. Metal Walker
- Release Data: TOSE/Capcom, 2001
- Genre: Role-Playing » Japanese-Style
Capcom has created a quality product, although the resemblance to Nintendo’s premier franchise is in some cases blatant.
However, Metal Walker is a more than worthwhile endeavor for anyone that is in between Pokémon games, and it can serve as an alternative for those fans of RPGs that might be too ashamed to admit that they’re playing Pokémon.
#4. Magi Nation
- Release Data: Interactive Imagination, 2001
- Genre: Role-Playing » Japanese-Style
Released on the Game Boy Color in 2001, it arrived at a time when the Japanese ruled the role-playing realm.
Magi Nation follows the quest of the game’s hero, Tony Jones, as he wanders the Moonlands.
Dared by his peers to go into a mysterious cave, Tony finds himself suddenly thrust into a parallel realm without a clue how to get home.
#3. Dragon Warrior III
- Release Data: TOSE/Enix Corporation, 2001
- Genre: Role-Playing » Japanese-Style
With a compelling storyline, astounding graphics, beautiful music, simple gameplay and being one of the largest RPGs on the GBC (spanning over 40 hours), Dragon Warrior III stands apart from the multitude, a shining example of what the definitive role-playing experience on the GBC should be.
Simply put, this is one of those must have games in your game library.
#2. Pokemon Gold Version
- Release Data: Game Freak/Nintendo, 2000
- Genre: Role-Playing » Trainer
This sequel to the incredibly popular Pokemon Blue and Red amps up things in almost every department.
There are now more than 250 Pokemon to find and collect, expanding the Pokedex from the original 151.
Overall, this is one of the best turn-based RPGs on the Game Boy Color, and it’s welcoming enough for even the newest of gamers.
#1. Pokemon Silver Version
- Release Data: Game Freak/Nintendo, 2000
- Genre: Role-Playing » Trainer
Although gameplay is similar to Pokemon Red and Blue, this second-generation Pokemon title brings in a few new features.
There’s also a slew of new Pokemon to collect, fleshing out your party with new skills and abilities.
If you think you have what it takes to become the Pokemon Master, I highly recommend you give it a try.
